In the article The Beauty of Aging. When Art Challenges Time, published in the April-June 2026 issue of "Anemos - Neuroscience", Chiara Codeluppi, psychologist, geropsychologist, and systemic psychotherapist, describes how the SOC model — Selection, Optimization, Compensation — represents a system of actions and behaviors through which old age can be experienced not as a period of faculties declining but, rather, as a time in which in particular «while some fluid abilities [...] tend to decline, other components — such as crystallized knowledge, emotional experience, and the ability to attribute meaning — can be maintained or even strengthened.» (p. 51)
The author then notes and explains that the SOC model is recognizable in the later stages of life of artists Michelangelo Buonarroti, Arthur Rubinstein, and Leonard Bernstein, and that, on a creative level, it represented a moment in their lives with its own generative characteristics.
